#THEFUTUREIS 2020 CAMPAIGN: LIVE EVENT, VIDEO & OPEN LETTER

Our 2020 #TheFutureIs campaign was a Youth Day campaign to acknowledge the pain, rage and devastation felt as a result of hundreds of years of oppression, inequality, racism (environmental and otherwise) which has been laid bare during the Covid-19 Pandemic and has reignited the #blacklivesmatter protests in the US and around the world. The same systems that have led to the devastating climate crisis that we see today.

Some of the campaign outcomes included a:

Live Stream Event

A live-streamed event to honour youth day was hosted on zoom on 16 June giving youth the opportunity to have their voices heard in an open space dedicated to their voices. The programme consisted of:

  • Gabriel Klaasen, youth co-ordinator of ACA as MC

  • Nkosenathi Ernie Koela – indigenous music to give thanks to and honour the ancestors of this land, including those who lost their lives in 1976

  • Othembele Dyanti – EarthChild Project and ACA youth activist

  • Puleng – Amnesty International UCT – Unpacking Environmental Racism

  • Ayakha Melithafa – ACA

  • Therezia Mateza – learner from Gardens Commercial High who is part of the Interfaith Schools Programme of GOAL and Cape Town Interfaith Initiative – poem 

  • Mitchelle Mhaka – ACA

  • Bonga Kwana,  singer/songwriter and multifaceted creative firecracker. – Performance

  • Amaarah Gardah – Anti-GBV activist, currently doing her honours in Applied Development Economics, head of Politics, South African & International Affairs at the Union of Muslim Students Association. (Unite and Share for Peace and Prosperity)

  • Amy Chambers – ACA 

  • Khulekani Magwaza – Safcei

  • Jule Booysen – learner from Kuilsriver, part of the African Future Leaders Hub 

  • Raeesah Noor-Mahomed – ACA/Stage for Change –  Ukulele Protest song

  • Anelisa – Earth Child Eco Warrior

  • Sai Govindsamy – ACA

  • Thameena – Amnesty International UCT – “The Future is Intersectional” 

  • Tshegofatso ‘Kingston’ Makwe (Global White Lions Protection Trust) – Drumming 

Opinion Piece in Daily Maverick

ACA youth activists Nick Ford, Gabriel Klassen, Mani Alexander and Amy Chambers wrote an op-ed to support the campaign: Our future is not a game – #TheFutureIsNow which was published by Daily Maverick.
