WHAT IS THE EACOP?

EACOP stands for East African Crude Oil Pipeline. a proposed 1,445-kilometer heated pipeline that will transport oil from Hoima, Uganda to the port of Tanga in Tanzania. Because of this the #STOPEACOP campaign has formed. A global campaign against the building of the East African Crude Oil pipeline.

It is led by an alliance of local groups and communities as well as African and international organisations. It is aimed at raising awareness about EACOP and calling to account those responsible for its development.

WHO AND WHAT WILL BE MOST AFFECTED BY EACOP?

EACOP is guaranteed to displace communities, endanger wildlife and natural systems, as well as tip the world closer to full-blown climate catastrophe by contributing more carbon emissions that worsen climate change.

PEOPLE

  • Over 100,000 people across East Africa are set to lose the land they rely on. Many will be forcefully removed from their homes.

  • The pipeline will run through Africa’s largest lake, Lake Victoria. Around 40 million people depend on this lake for water and food production.

  • A likely spill or leak would cause disaster for the people who depend on the freshwater resources for their livelihood and survival.

NATURE

  • People are not separate from nature, so any negative impact on people is a negative impact on nature too.

  • The pipeline will run through major habitats and nature reserves. Areas that are home to iconic and endangered animals.

  • Creating a massive line of wide open space for the pipeline will stop animals from accessing food on the other side.

THE CLIMATE

  • The scientific evidence tells us that we have about one decade left to dramatically decrease our carbon emissions if we want to avoid catastrophic climate change.

  • EACOP will generate over 34 million extra tons of carbon emissions each year. it will also harm the natural systems that act as a natural buffer to climate change.
