Cape Town Climate Concert Sets the Stage for Action this Youth Month

30 years into democracy, the first Cape Town Climate Concert will be held, set to kick off Youth Month 2024.

Cape Town, South Africa — 30 years into democracy, the first Cape Town Climate Concert will be held, set to kick off Youth Month 2024. Calendars can be marked for Saturday, June 1, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM, at 196 Victoria Road, Woodstock, Cape Town.

The concert, organized by the African Climate Alliance, isn't just about music; it's a rallying cry for a better future. Building on the long South African history of the connection between song and social change, the Cape Town Climate Concert aims to bring together people living in Cape Town and surrounds. People who believe in using music as a way to call for systemic change as a pathway to address climate change and related social injustices. All whilst celebrating the good work already being done by organizations and people in this space.

Expect a formidable lineup of local artists who are ready to rock the stage and rock the boat! From the soulful vibes of Kujenga, to the anarchist hip-hop of Soundz of the South, to the uplifting tunes of Soulitude and Friends, and the dynamic duo, Nikita and Ethan Adams, aka ethnik. 

In addition to musical performances, attendees will have the opportunity to engage with organizations actively involved in environmental and social justice initiatives. Through informational booths, participants can learn about ongoing efforts and discover ways to contribute to the movement.

This family-friendly event is alcohol and substance-free, creating a safe and inclusive space for all attendees to enjoy the music and connect with like-minded individuals. Food will be available for purchase. Tickets can be booked in advance to secure a spot as there is limited space.

Kujenga

Kujenga is a Black improvised music outfit based in Cape Town. The band’s name comes from the Swahili language, with the word meaning “to build.” The title symbolises the group’s belief in their calling as creators: to build meaningful experiences and connections with every listener. Kujenga follows on from the rich legacy of Black band music in South Africa, with the ensemble representing the present and future of this historic sound.

Soundz of the South

Soundz of the South is a political hip-hop collective working to build an international working-class counter-culture that is anti-authoritarian, anti-capitalist, anti-racist, and anti-sexist. As a band, they seek to foster new social values and new forms of collective organising, which will become the socio-political infrastructure of the free society. 

 

Soulitude and Friends

Monwabisi "Soulitude" Dasi is a cultural activist. To create and communicate is his mission and purpose on earth. He has a passion for visual Art, music, and collaboration, and explores expression through art in various forms.

Soulitude is not alone, he brings with him Dan Boshoff (acoustic guitar& lead guitar), Bonolo Nkoane (drums), and four backing Vocalists. Coming together from across the Peninsula, they bring you a rich combination of Jazz, funk, Storytelling, Rhythm, Soul and Poetry. Together they are called Soulitude and Friends

 

Nikita and Ethan Adams a.k.a ethink

ethnik is a dynamic and versatile vocalist and guitar duo, known for delivering captivating performances that blend soulful vocals with intricate guitar melodies. With a diverse repertoire spanning genres such as pop, rock, gospel, jazz, folk, and acoustic covers of contemporary hits, we bring a unique and unforgettable musical experience to every event.

African Climate Alliance is a youth-led, grassroots, movement-based organisation acting and advocating for Afrocentric climate justice. African Climate Alliance acts and advocates for Afrocentric climate justice through four programme areas: education, advocacy, action and ambassadors. At the heart of all that we do is building accessible and inclusive socio-environmental literacy and capacity in young people to lead on climate justice initiatives in their own communities.
