CAPE TOWN CLIMATE WEEK 2023: PRESS RELEASE

Cape Town Climate Week 2023: Fostering Dialogue, Collaboration, and Dynamic Action Towards a Just and Sustainable Future

Cape Town Climate Week, the annual flagship event dedicated to addressing climate change and its intersections with socio-political injustices, is set to return from 18-22 September 2023.

This week-long event, initiated by African Climate Alliance, in partnership with a number climate justice leaders in the civil society space, including: Bertha House, Langa bicycle hub, Project 90 by 2030, Environmental Monitoring Group, Feed the Future, Mzanzi Organics, Fossil Free South Africa, Clean Creatives, Generation Africa, Fair Finance Coalition South Africa, Just Share, Climate Lounge, and more will provide a crucial platform for stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue, collaboration, and dynamic action, all aimed at paving the way towards the systemic change required to achieve a just and sustainable future.

Cape Town Climate Week was introduced in 2022 to put active grassroots engagement at the forefront of raising awareness and creating pathways towards system change as a means to address the climate crisis and related social and political injustices. With climate change’s increasing severity, the event seeks to underscore the importance of systemic solutions to these multifaceted challenges.

The objectives of Cape Town Climate Week 2023 are threefold:

1. Raising Awareness: This year, Cape Town Climate Week will emphasise the urgency and severity of the climate crisis and its intersections with socio-political injustices. It will highlight how systemic change can serve as a viable solution to this global crisis.

2. Fostering Dialogue and Collaboration: The event aims to bring together a diverse range of stakeholders from Cape Town and beyond to engage in constructive dialogue and collaboration. By fostering these connections, Cape Town Climate Week strives to strengthen the collective response to climate change.

3. Showcasing Solutions: Cape Town Climate Week will showcase innovative solutions and best practices across five key thematic areas: Transport, Energy and Water, Food, Finance, and Artivism.

The five thematic areas of Cape Town Climate Week 2023 reflect the complex and multifaceted nature of the climate crisis in South Africa, considering the unique socio-economic and cultural context of the country, and will serve as focal points for discussion, action, and inspiration:

  • Transport: Exploring sustainable transportation solutions that reduce emissions and enhance mobility.

  • Energy and Water: Highlighting sustainable energy practices and water management strategies with a focus on democracy and sovereignty.

  • Food: Promoting decentralized, community led urban food systems

  • Finance: Discussing innovative financial mechanisms that support climate action

  • Artivism: Celebrating the power of art and creativity in driving climate action and raising awareness.

Cape Town Climate Week 2023 is poised to be an enriching experience for participants and attendees alike. It will offer a dynamic platform to engage with experts, thought leaders, and advocates working towards a sustainable and just future in South Africa.

Join us at Cape Town Climate Week 2023 and be part of the solution. Together, we can create pathways toward a more resilient and equitable world for future generations.
